neighbourhood of Legazpi

Legazpi

Officially and popularly Legazpi, after the square dedicated to Miguel López de Legazpi, conquistador and first governor of the Philippines, named Felipinas in 1543 in honour of the infante and future king Philip II.

At the southern tip of Madrid’s core, edged by the Manzanares, there were once orchards and rural paths that were said to be a delight to walk. Then came the railway, and with it the factories and the warehouses. It was a place of supply between a slaughterhouse and a fruit and vegetable market. The names of its streets reflect the exploration of what lies beyond the river, the ocean or the cosmos. There are names of those who crossed the waters, and of those who, like Méndez Álvaro, sought people’s health and well-being. There are also metals found among the stars, and a Planeta Tierra (Planet Earth) that also names one of them.
