Calle Manuel Aleixandre

Legazpi

Honors the Madrid actor Manuel Alexandre (1917-2010), a celebrated supporting player of Spanish cinema, whom the street map recalls with the spelling Aleixandre.

The sign recalls one of the most recognizable faces of Spanish cinema. Manuel Alexandre Abarca was born in Madrid in 1917, studied Law and Journalism and fought on the Republican side in the defense of the city before turning to acting. He reached the big screen in 1953 with Berlanga’s Bienvenido, Mr. Marshall, the first link in a career of six decades and more than three hundred films. For years he was a supporting player by trade, a face the public recognized without always recalling his name, in titles such as Plácido or Amanece, que no es poco. In his nineties he even took leading roles. He received the Honorary Goya in 2003 and died in Madrid in 2010, at 92. After his death, the name fell on this street in Legazpi. The plaque keeps the form Manuel Aleixandre, with an i the actor did not use in his stage name, where he signed as Alexandre.
