Calle de Meneses
Takes its name from Meneses de Campos, a village in Palencia in the Tierra de Campos region, though no record survives of why it was chosen for this street.
On the edge of Legazpi, where Arganzuela looks out over the Manzanares, this street takes its name from Meneses, an old Castilian place-name from the Tierra de Campos. Meneses de Campos is today a small town in Palencia, on the plain that skirts the southern slopes of the Montes Torozos, resettled between the 10th and 11th centuries by families from the north.
From that ground rose one of the great lineages of medieval Castile, the Téllez de Meneses, vassals of Alfonso VIII with estates across the whole district. Family and village stayed bound for centuries to the history of the kingdom.
Why Madrid’s street-namers fixed this name here is not documented. It fits a neighborhood full of place-name signs, but no record survives to explain the choice.
