Calle de Vicente Caballero

Estrella

A street in the Estrella neighborhood dedicated to a Vicente Caballero of whom no record survives of who he was.

Some streets keep a proper name and have lost the face behind it. Calle de Vicente Caballero is one: a short, quiet stretch of the Estrella neighborhood, in Retiro, marked with the first and last name of someone the city meant to remember. Who this Vicente Caballero was is not documented. The neighborhood was developed from the 1950s on, as Madrid grew eastward, and much of its street naming is recent and less easily traced. Many signs point to the firmament, but this street falls outside the series. Today it is a residential way of just over two hundred meters, with the murmur of its local shops, and the surname stays on the plaque, waiting for someone to reconstruct the story that put it there.
