Túnel de Ríos Rosas

Vallehermoso·Ríos Rosas

Inherits the name of the calle de Ríos Rosas, dedicated to the politician and orator Antonio de los Ríos Rosas.

This underpass in Chamberí takes the name of the street it serves, the calle de Ríos Rosas, signposted in 1880 in honour of Antonio de los Ríos Rosas, a politician born in Ronda in 1812, minister of the interior and three times president of Congress. It links the street with the avenida de Filipinas and connects with the Cristo Rey tunnel, in the web of underpasses beneath the calle de Santa Engracia. Above the street that gives it its name stands the School of Mines, and beneath it, between 1963 and 1967, a practice mine was dug: a gallery reproducing a coal working that never yielded coal. Whoever crosses the tunnel passes, unknowingly, beside it.
