Plaza del Teatro
A roundabout laid out over the site of the old Vicente Calderón stadium, dedicated to the performing arts at the proposal of three city chroniclers.
Where Atlético de Madrid’s goals once thundered, a new layout of streets and green spaces now opens up. The Vicente Calderón stadium was demolished after the club moved on, and the redevelopment of its grounds and the old brewery raised a neighbourhood where there had been terraces. The Glorieta del Teatro was born of that transformation, where the calle de San Epifanio meets the Paseo de los Melancólicos.
The name points to no particular theatre: it honours the performing arts and their weight in the capital. The same plan dedicated nearby streets to two stage figures, the actress and singer Nati Mistral and the playwright Francisco Nieva.
Anyone walking here today treads garden where there was once grandstand concrete.
