Calle de Jesús

Barrio de las Letras·Cortes

Named after the old convent of Discalced Trinitarians of Our Lady of the Incarnation (1606), which guarded the image of Jesus of Nazareth, the Christ of Medinaceli. It was earlier called Calle de los Trinitarios.

A convent of Discalced Trinitarians once stood here, under the patronage of the House of Medinaceli. One carving made the place famous: a Jesus of Nazareth ransomed from captivity in Fez in 1682, which kept its patrons' name forever. Hence the Christ of Medinaceli, and hence the name of the street and the neighboring square. The convent was demolished in 1922. On its ground rose, between 1927 and 1930, the basilica seen today, the work of Jesús Carrasco-Muñoz.
