Calle de la Cruz
Boundary between Sol / Cortes
After a cross that once crowned the top of the spot, known as the little hill of the Cross before the street existed. The name predates the street.
The brotherhoods of La Pasión and La Soledad bought a plot on this street in 1579 and raised there the Corral de la Cruz playhouse, opened in 1584, almost at the same time as the one on calle del Príncipe. For generations the theatre of the Golden Age premiered here.
The name, however, is older than the street. The rise that topped it was known as the little hill of the Cross, for the cross that stood at its highest point. That cross vanished centuries ago, but the name stayed fixed to the place and came down to the street that now bears it.
