Pasaje Can Mayor

Estrella

Named after the constellation Canis Major, the hunting dog that follows Orion across the winter sky and home to Sirius, the brightest star of the night.

The Estrella neighborhood grew east of the Retiro between the 1950s and 1970s, and its streets all followed one thread: stars, celestial fish and constellations. That is how calle de Sirio, calle de la Estrella Polar, calle del Pez Volador came to be, and alongside them this Pasaje Can Mayor. Canis Major is the hunting dog that chases Orion on winter nights. On its muzzle shines Sirius, the brightest star in the entire night sky. The Egyptians watched for it at dawn because its rising coincided with the flooding of the Nile. A few meters away, Pasaje Can Menor completes the pair, just as in the sky the small dog keeps company with the large one.
