Calle Santiago Artigas
Recalls Santiago Artigas (1881-1931), actor and theater manager who formed with his wife Josefina Díaz one of the best-known companies of Madrid in the early decades of the twentieth century.
Santiago Artigas Andreu (1881-1931) was an actor and theater manager, one of the leading figures of the Spanish stage in the early decades of the twentieth century. He formed his own company with his wife, the actress Josefina Díaz, and together they toured the stages of Madrid and the Americas.
The Artigas-Díaz company premiered works by Marquina, the Machado brothers and authors such as Ibsen. After Artigas died in 1931, his widow led a new company alongside Manuel Collado, and with it starred in a premiere that belongs to the history of theater: on 8 March 1933, at the Teatro Beatriz in Madrid, the curtain rose for the first time on Bodas de sangre, by Federico García Lorca, with Josefina in the role of the bride.
The street is in El Viso, the rationalist estate that Rafael Bergamín designed between 1933 and 1936.
