Calle Luis Esteban
Bears the name of a Luis Esteban of whom no record survives, on one of the streets born from the parcelling of the old Ventilla, north of Tetuán.
The name points to a person, Luis Esteban, but no record survives of who he was or why the street was dedicated to him. Neither the street registry nor the neighbourhood’s memory holds his origin.
The street belongs to the Almenara district, at the far north of Tetuán, on land that until 1948 belonged to the municipality of Chamartín de la Rosa. While the old core of Tetuán filled with streets tied to the African War, the working-class parcels of Ventilla and Almenara were labelled with plain personal names whose bearers were not always recorded. Luis Esteban is one of those cases.
Today it is a short street, just over two hundred metres, wedged into the neighbourhood’s dense grid of blocks. The sign keeps a name whose subject is no longer known.
