Calle Hermanos de Andrés

Almenara

A tribute to Juan and Demetrio de Andrés, two teachers from La Ventilla killed in the Civil War.

The name recalls Juan and Demetrio de Andrés, lay teachers who taught in La Ventilla when this corner of northern Madrid was a fringe of low houses and open lots. They helped raise the area’s first Catholic school, alongside Father José María Rubio, and died during the Civil War; local memory recalled them as the “martyrs of La Ventilla”. The name reached the map on 5 June 1959. Before that, this stretch between San Aquilino and Magnolias was called calle del Vertedero. Today it is barely a hundred and thirty metres of quiet street in Almenara, with no plaque to explain the story.
