Calle del Sol

Fuente del Berro

Calle del Sol takes its name from the sun, a generic descriptive name given when the street was laid out around 1928 in the Fuente del Berro neighborhood. The official street register records no earlier name, and no authoritative source pins down the exact reason.

In the Fuente del Berro neighborhood there is a short lane called Calle del Sol. The municipal register entered it on 1 January 1928 and it has carried that name from the first day. Around it run streets honoring doctors and 19th-century figures: Doctor Esquerdo, Dolores Romero, Gabriel Abreu, Doctor Oloriz. Beside those illustrious names, “Sol” sounds different, almost humble. It was the plain formula then reserved for minor lanes, the ones that aspired to commemorate no one. And there the mystery begins. Anyone who wants to believe the name celebrates a sunlit façade is free to, but no document confirms it. A street that keeps its secret in broad daylight.
