Calle del Poeta Claudio Rodríguez

Prosperidad

It honours Claudio Rodríguez (1934-1999), a poet from Zamora of the mid-century generation who at nineteen published his first book, Don de la ebriedad.

At nineteen, a student from Zamora newly arrived in Madrid won the Adonáis prize with his first book, Don de la ebriedad, and Spanish poetry realised someone different had appeared. That young man was Claudio Rodríguez (1934-1999), and that debut became one of the most celebrated books of verse of the twentieth century. He was soon placed among the mid-century generation, and his habit of composing on foot, almost singing his lines across the fields of Castile, is still remembered. The city that had taken him in as a young man returned the gesture by naming this short street in the Prosperidad quarter after him.
