Calle del Marqués de Encinares

Almenara

Recalls the marquisate of Encinares, a noble title linked to a place of that name in Usagre (Badajoz), though the reason for its dedication in Almenara is undocumented.

Calle del Marqués de Encinares points to a noble title tied to the south of the province of Badajoz. Encinares is a spot within the municipality of Usagre, in the district of Llerena, and from there the marquisate took its name, far from Tetuán. The second Marquis of Encinares was Matías López López, a resident of Usagre who served as provincial deputy of Badajoz in the years of the Cortes of Cádiz. He shares a name with the famous Galician chocolatier of the nineteenth century, but the man honored in Almenara is the Extremaduran politician. No reliable record survives of why Madrid’s street plan chose this title for a street in Almenara, built up quickly over the old orchards of la Ventilla.
