Calle de Santa María Magdalena

Nueva España

Named after Mary Magdalene, a disciple of Jesus and first witness to the resurrection, venerated as a saint by the Church.

The name honors Mary Magdalene, the woman the Gospels place among Jesus’s closest followers, standing firm at the foot of the cross when nearly everyone else had fled. According to the accounts, the risen Christ appeared first to her and charged her with spreading the news, a gesture that earned her the title “apostle of the apostles.” The street is tied to the calendar of saints through the nearby parish on Calle de Drácena. Miguel Fisac designed it and it was consecrated in 1968: he set aside Baroque ornamentation for a plainness of concrete and light that still surprises anyone who enters expecting an ornate interior.
