Calle de Mariano Fernández
It recalls Mariano Fernández (1814-1890), a Madrid comic actor of the Teatro del Príncipe.
Mariano Fernández was born in Madrid in 1814 and joined the Teatro del Príncipe company in 1834. There he found his ground: comic roles, the absurd characters with which he drew laughter from the audience.
He attended to every detail of his humor. He sought outlandish hats and colorful waistcoats for each performance, and his mere appearance on stage was enough to win the house over. His greatest success was La redoma encantada, a magic comedy he came to perform more than eighty times. He died in 1890 at his home on the calle de la Cruz.
The streets of the Berruguete district, laid out well into the twentieth century, took his name alongside others from the Spanish stage.
