Calle de Manuel Caldeiro
Honours Manuel Caldeiro Parajuá, a nineteenth-century Madrid notary who left his entire fortune to found a school for orphans.
The name recalls Manuel Caldeiro Parajuá (1827-1894), a Madrid notary with roots in Lugo who left his fortune to shelter the city’s parentless children.
Over his lifetime Caldeiro built up a sizeable estate of properties around Madrid. He had no children, so in his will he directed that all his assets go towards creating a foundation to take in the city’s orphans. His executors carried out the charge: they sold the properties and with the proceeds built a large Neo-Mudéjar school surrounded by garden.
The works were finished in 1904 and the school opened in 1911 with three hundred pupils. The Caldeiro Foundation still operates today as a school near Las Ventas.
