Calle de los Señores de Luzón
The name comes from the lineage of the Lords of Luzón, who took their surname from the town of Luzón (Guadalajara), where they held the seigneury. Pedro de Luzón, treasurer and steward to John II and warden of Madrid’s Royal Alcázar, established here the ancestral house of his family’s entail, next to the church of San Salvador. The Luzón name is documented on the stretch as early as the 15th century; Espinosa de los Monteros' map (1769) records it as “Luzón.” In the 20th century it was expanded to “Señores de Luzón” to distinguish it from the alley of the same name.
A short, narrow street beside Plaza de la Villa, it links Calle Mayor with calle de la Cruzada. Its cramped course is a relic of medieval Madrid, when it skirted the northern edge of the old medina. Before it was Luzón it was calle de los Estelos and calle de San Salvador, after the parish church that presided over the square.
The name comes from the Luzón family, weighty figures at court. Pedro de Luzón appears in Madrid in John II’s time holding offices that now seem impossible: warden of the Alcázars, chief bailiff, treasurer and royal steward. Their ancestral house stood at number 4, beside the church of San Salvador, and was demolished in 1935.
The street holds fine architecture: a 1911 Art Nouveau building at number 9, with a curved corner balcony, and the so-called palace of the Lords of Luzón (1864), decorated with works by Zuloaga, sculptures by Benlliure and Mauméjean stained glass, today home to the Centro District Council.
