Calle de la Madre Carmen del Niño Jesús
Honours the Blessed Carmen del Niño Jesús (Antequera, 1834-1899), widow and founder of the Franciscan Sisters of the Sacred Hearts.
Carmen González Ramos was born in Antequera in 1834, into a well-off family. She married at around twenty-two and was widowed some twenty years later, with no children. Already a widow, in 1884 she founded the congregation of the Franciscan Sisters of the Sacred Hearts, devoted to educating girls and caring for the sick. She then took the religious name by which the calle remembers her: Carmen del Niño Jesús.
In her lifetime she opened eleven houses. She died in Antequera in 1899 and was beatified there in 2007. The congregation she left behind later spread beyond Spain, with houses in several countries of the Americas.
The name of the calle is no accident: the Colegio San Francisco de Asís, run by that same congregation, has its seat here, so the sign and the building point to the same founder.
