Calle de la Infanta María Teresa

Hispanoamérica

Recalls María Teresa of Bourbon, infanta of Spain, daughter of Alfonso XII and sister of Alfonso XIII, who died in 1912 at the age of twenty-nine.

The name recalls an infanta who barely passed the age of twenty-nine. María Teresa of Bourbon was born in Madrid in 1882, daughter of Alfonso XII and elder sister of Alfonso XIII. In 1906 she married her cousin Ferdinand of Bavaria and had four children; the last birth cost her her life, in an embolism, in September 1912. Her brother the king ordered for her the honours of a Princess of Asturias. Calle de la Infanta María Teresa belongs to the Hispanoamérica neighbourhood, laid out over the former outskirts of northern Madrid, where names of infantes and American lands abound. Here it keeps that of a king’s daughter whom illness took young.
