Calle de la Bolsa

Sol

The name comes from the Old Customs building, erected in 1645, which from 1 February 1850 housed the Madrid Stock Exchange. The street took the name from 1875, when an urban reform absorbed the old Plazuela de la Leña and opened the wider road known today.

It joins Plaza de Jacinto Benavente with Plaza de Santa Cruz, in the Sol quarter, a few steps from the Plaza Mayor. For centuries it was an irregular little square called Plaza de la Aduana Vieja. The building that named the street was built in 1645 as a customs house. When the Royal Customs moved to its new premises on calle de Alcalá in 1769, the building passed from hand to hand until, in 1850, it housed the Madrid Stock Exchange. The Exchange stayed until 1893, when it opened its own palace. The street took the name from 1875, with the reform that absorbed the old Plazuela de la Leña. The old Customs building held out until the 1950s. Today the Centro Gallego occupies its site.
