Calle de Jerónimo de la Quintana

Trafalgar

Honors Jerónimo de la Quintana (Madrid, 1576-1644), a priest and author of the first complete history of the city.

Before it had a name of its own, this street was only a plan. On the Núñez Granés map of 1910 it appears as the continuation of Rodríguez San Pedro, because it followed the line of that avenue. The city council gave it an identity on 5 March 1924, dedicated to one of the first chroniclers to set down the city’s past in writing. Jerónimo de la Quintana was born in Madrid in 1576. He was a priest, rector of the Hospital de la Latina, and founded a charitable brotherhood for priests born in the town. Around 1627 he finished his history of Madrid, printed in 1629: the first complete history of the city. Two centuries later, Mesonero Romanos called him the dean of Madrid’s chroniclers. He died on 9 November 1644 in the same hospital he directed.
