Calle de Gabriel Díez

Cuatro Caminos

A short street in Cuatro Caminos bearing the name of a Gabriel Díez of whom no documented record survives.

Barely seventy meters between Galatea and Galdo, in the heart of Cuatro Caminos, carry the name of Gabriel Díez. Who that Gabriel Díez was is the part that hasn’t survived: the street register fixes the road and its number, but no record remains of the person it honors or when it was named. The silence fits the neighborhood’s history. Cuatro Caminos grew in the late nineteenth century as a slum north of Madrid, and much of its fabric rose through private initiative. Many streets took the names of owners, residents, or local developers whose memory never reached beyond the block. What remains is a street you cross without thinking, its sign intact and its origin blank.
