Calle de Francisco Lozano

Argüelles

Recalls Francisco Lozano, a sixteenth-century conquistador who accompanied Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada in the conquest of the New Kingdom of Granada.

The name recalls a Francisco Lozano listed among the conquistadors who in the sixteenth century accompanied Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada in the conquest of the New Kingdom of Granada, the land that is today Colombia. Of that band that went up the Magdalena river to the highland where Santa Fe de Bogotá would be founded, Lozano is one of many minor names, with barely any biographical trace of his own. The street opened in the Madrid that was growing westward, between Martín de los Heros and Ferraz. He should not be confused with Francisco Lozano Sanchís, a twentieth-century painter from Valencia: the sign predates him and honours the man from the sixteenth.
