Calle de Emilia

It bears a woman’s first name whose origin has not been documented.

The street keeps a simple first name, with no surname beside it, on a plaque in the Almenara neighbourhood of Tetuán. Almenara, which many locals kept calling la Ventilla, grew largely off the official map, on parcelled-out land and houses built by the residents themselves. In that fabric of modest streets, a first name like Emilia was enough to find your way, even as its actual owner faded with time.
