Calle de Daniel

Nueva España

It bears a given name of Hebrew root, that of the prophet Daniel, though no record survives of whom the street meant to honor.

A plaque with a single given name, no surname and no title, leaves the passerby without clues. The calle de Daniel is a short street in the Nueva España neighborhood, and the reason for its name is not reliably documented: neither the municipal decision nor the person it commemorates has survived. The name does have a clear root. Daniel comes from the Hebrew Daniyyel, “God is my judge,” the Old Testament prophet taken captive to Babylon, who interpreted dreams at the court of Nebuchadnezzar and came out of the lions' den without a scratch. What cannot be affirmed is that the street was dedicated to the saint and not to a flesh-and-blood Daniel, a resident or owner of the area, as happened with other streets in the old Chamartín colonies. With no papers, the recipient remains undetermined.
