Calle de Alejandro Saint Aubin

Chopera

Honours Alejandro Saint-Aubin y Bonnefon (Madrid, 1857-1916), painter, art critic and journalist who edited El Heraldo de Madrid.

Alejandro Saint-Aubin y Bonnefon was born in Madrid in 1857 and died in the same city in 1916. From a family of French origin, he trained at the San Fernando School of Fine Arts and cultivated landscape and genre painting, winning awards at the National Exhibitions of 1895 and 1897. His age knew him more for the pen than the brush. He wrote art and music criticism in El Liberal and El Heraldo de Madrid, a paper he came to edit. From that platform he pressed for the chapel of San Antonio de la Florida, with the dome Goya painted in fresco, to be declared a national monument, a distinction it received in 1905. He was also a member of parliament and brother-in-law of José Canalejas, the prime minister shot dead in the Puerta del Sol in 1912. The street is a short stretch of the Chopera between paseo de la Chopera and calle de Guillermo Osma.
