Calle del Amor de Dios

Barrio de las Letras·Cortes

For an image of Our Lady of the Love of God venerated in a chapel on the path that led down to the meadow of San Jerónimo. From that devotion came the street’s name, and also the hospital founded by Antón Martín in 1552.

There was no street here, only a path between vegetable gardens. In the doorway of one house someone placed an image of Our Lady of the Love of God, and the neighbors grew so fond of it that it became a local devotion. One day the vicar decided the image would be better off inside a church and ordered it moved. The neighbors dug in and would not let it be taken from their corner. The dispute ended with the image installed in the hospital Antón Martín had built around 1552, known by that same name. The name nearly vanished in 1931, when the street was renamed Roberto Castrovido. The old title returned to the plaque in 1940 and remains here still.
