Calle de Sirio

Estrella

The name evokes Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky, within a neighborhood whose entire street plan is dedicated to stars and constellations.

Sirius is the brightest star in the night sky, a white jewel burning a little under nine light-years from Earth and glittering in the constellation of Canis Major, the celestial dog. It is so intense that under good conditions it can be glimpsed even by day. Calle de Sirio belongs to the Estrella neighborhood, in Retiro, built in the 1960s on land owned by the insurance company La Estrella. Hence its streets raised their gaze to the heavens and took the names of stars and constellations. A few steps separate it from Calle de la Estrella Polar, Calle de la Cruz del Sur and the passages of Can Mayor and Can Menor. The choice has a planetarium logic: the star lives precisely in Canis Major, whose passage lies just steps away. Walking from one to the other traces on the asphalt the same line the ancients drew across the sky.
