Plaza de la Condesa de Gavia
Honours a Countess of Gavia who funded much of the church of San Antonio de Cuatro Caminos.
The name recalls a Countess of Gavia who funded much of the church of San Antonio de Cuatro Caminos, the Capuchin temple that stands on nearby calle de Bravo Murillo. For that work, the city dedicated the square to her in 1954, as the district grew quickly with modest houses around the roundabout that named the area.
The county of Gavia came from much earlier: Charles II created it in 1680, and the title takes its name from Gabia la Grande, now in the municipality of Las Gabias, south of Granada. So a square in northern Madrid keeps in its sign the echo of a village in the Granada plain.
