Glorieta de Sor Justa Domínguez de Vidaurreta

Guindalera

A roundabout honouring Justa Domínguez de Vidaurreta e Idoy (Azpeitia, 1875 – Madrid, 1958), a Daughter of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul and visitor of the Spanish province between 1932 and 1958. Pope Francis declared her Venerable on 14 April 2018; beatification awaits verification of a miracle.

Justa Domínguez de Vidaurreta e Idoy came into the world in Azpeitia, Gipuzkoa, on 2 November 1875, the only daughter among eight children of a Carlist family. She began her religious path in 1895 as a postulant at the Civil Hospital of Pamplona and entered the Daughters of Charity seminary in Madrid that autumn. In 1932 she took on a post of enormous responsibility: visitor of the Spanish province, then the largest in the world, with 628 communities and some 8,300 sisters. She held it until her death, and under her leadership the province grew to 867 communities and 11,500 members. The Civil War struck her head on: she was imprisoned between 1936 and 1937. She died in Madrid on 18 December 1958. On 14 April 2018 Pope Francis approved the decree of her heroic virtues. The Glorieta de Sor Justa Domínguez de Vidaurreta opens beside the Avenida de Camilo José Cela, steps from the provincial headquarters of the Daughters of Charity, on Calle del Pintor Moreno Carbonero.
