Glorieta de Rocío Durcal

Berruguete

Honours Rocío Dúrcal (1944-2006), a Madrid singer and actress, queen of the ranchera, who grew up in this corner of Tetuán.

This roundabout recalls María de los Ángeles de las Heras Ortiz, born in nearby Cuatro Caminos in 1944 and known across half the world as Rocío Dúrcal. Her stage surname was chosen by a finger dropped blindly onto a map of Spain, landing on a village in Granada; “Rocío” came from her grandfather, who found her voice as fresh as the morning dew. She started as a child on radio contests and made a dozen films before becoming, in Mexico, the singer of rancheras and mariachis they called “the most Mexican of Spaniards.” As a girl she walked these streets in western Tetuán daily on her way to the Instituto de La Paloma. The city opened the roundabout on 23 March 2007, where Francos Rodríguez, Ofelia Nieto and Pablo Iglesias meet; Ofelia Nieto, a soprano, shares with her this corner dedicated to those who sang.
