Calle del Marqués de Torrelaguna

Castilla

Honors the title of Marquess of Torrelaguna, granted in 1895 to Martín Esteban y Muñoz, senator and deputy, whose name in turn points back to the Madrid town of Torrelaguna.

Behind the name is a young noble title. The regent queen María Cristina created the marquisate of Torrelaguna in 1895, during Alfonso XIII’s minority, and granted it to Martín Esteban y Muñoz. The title takes its name from the town of Torrelaguna, in the northern mountains of Madrid, so the street points to a lineage and, through it, to a town of the region. The first marquess was a senator and deputy in the Cortes, and a knight of the Legion of Honor. In the Senate he took part in committees on railway lines, among them one for the Madrid railway with a branch to Torrelaguna. He died in 1899, four years after receiving the distinction, and was succeeded by his son Eugenio Esteban, the second marquess, also a senator, who held the title until 1943.
