Calle de Santander
Named after Santander, the city and capital of Cantabria, in the familiar Madrid habit of christening streets with place names from around the country.
The name travels from the Cantabrian coast into the heart of Chamberí. It recalls Santander, capital of Cantabria and a port open to the sea, a royal summer resort when Alfonso XIII and Victoria Eugenia spent their summers at the Magdalena Palace. Here the street traces a long curve at the northwestern edge of Vallehermoso, beside the Avenida de Filipinas.
Alongside runs the Santander Park, which rests over the Third Reservoir of the Canal de Isabel II. Anyone walking down the Calle de Santander is treading above a piece of water engineering that supplied Madrid for more than a century.
