Calle de Santa Feliciana

Trafalgar

Honors Saint Felicity of Rome, a 2nd-century Christian martyr who, according to tradition, died with her seven sons.

The name honors a Christian martyr of 2nd-century Rome. Feliciana is the form in which Saint Felicity is remembered here, placed by tradition under the emperor Marcus Aurelius. Accused of professing Christianity, she was executed after witnessing the martyrdom of her seven sons. The street belongs to the Chamberí that grew in the last third of the 19th century, when the old outskirts were laid out in a grid of new streets named after female saints and battles. It begins at the Plaza de Olavide, the heart of the neighborhood, and drops to the Calle de Santa Engracia, where it meets the Calle de Rafael Calvo. Today it keeps the quiet air of the streets that lead into Olavide, the neighborhood’s octagonal square.
