Calle de Rosario Pino

Castillejos

Recalls Rosario Pino Bolaños (Málaga, 1870 - Madrid, 1933), an actress of the Spanish theater of the first third of the twentieth century.

Rosario Pino Bolaños was born in Málaga in 1870 and reigned over the Madrid stage when theater was the city’s great entertainment. She worked in María Tubau’s company before founding her own in 1906. At the Teatro Lara and later the Comedia she premiered the repertoire of Jacinto Benavente, who favored her with particular affection. Through her voice passed Rosas de otoño, Malvaloca, and El genio alegre. She was among the first women to ride a bicycle in the Madrid of the late nineteenth century, a bold gesture for an age that expected something else from a lady. The press fed a supposed rivalry with María Guerrero, more theatrical legend than real enmity. She died in Madrid in 1933, already retired. The city gave her back a place with this street in Castillejos.
