Calle de Ramiro II

Vallehermoso

Recalls Ramiro II, king of León from 931 to 951, who in the year 932 besieged the Andalusi fortress of Magerit and dismantled its walls.

Ramiro II reigned in León between 931 and 951, and left his mark on the first Madrid long before the present town existed. In the year 932 he crossed the Sierra de Guadarrama and laid siege to Magerit, the Andalusi fortress raised on the Almudena hill. He dismantled the walled enclosure, plundered the surrounding lands, and pushed on south, an assault that forced the Umayyads to reinforce the wall. The street opens among ways dedicated to other medieval monarchs of León and Asturias, in the heart of Vallehermoso. His effigy, scepter in hand, stands among the statues of kings in the Plaza de Oriente.
