Calle de Pardo Bazán

Hispanoamérica

Remembers José Pardo Bazán y Mosquera (1827-1890), count and deputy for La Coruña, father of the writer Emilia Pardo Bazán.

The surname sounds today like the novelist of Los pazos de Ulloa, but the tribute points to her father. José Pardo Bazán y Mosquera was born in La Coruña in 1827, served as mayor of his city and as a deputy in the Cortes under Isabella II and during the Sexenio Democrático. Pius IX granted him the papal title of count for defending the Church in parliament. His daughter Emilia inherited that title, yet for decades she had no street of her own in Madrid while her father already appeared on the map. The city finally dedicated a roundabout to her in the north, beside the calle de Rosalía de Castro.
