Calle de Nador

Almenara

It bears the name of Nador, a city in Morocco’s eastern Rif, facing Melilla.

Nador is a port city in Morocco’s eastern Rif, overlooking the Mar Chica lagoon, facing Melilla. In the early twentieth century it was little more than a cluster of houses; its name became tied to the Melilla campaign of 1909, when, after the setback at Barranco del Lobo, Spanish troops advanced through the hills that shield the town. The occupation of Nador and Tauima, in September of that year, was among the actions that preceded the campaign’s end. The streets of this part of Tetuán gather several place-names from North Africa, in keeping with the origin of the old suburb, built by former soldiers of the Moroccan campaigns. Nador is among those names of Rif towns and places carried over to Madrid streets, though neither the moment nor the exact reason for its naming is documented. The road is short, barely a couple of hundred meters, in the area of La Ventilla.
