Calle de Manuel Cortina

Trafalgar

Honors Manuel Cortina y Arenzana (1802-1879), a Seville-born lawyer and progressive politician who served as dean of the Madrid Bar Association from 1847 until his death.

The name recalls Manuel Cortina y Arenzana, a Seville-born lawyer born in 1802 who divided his life between the courts and politics. He opposed the absolutism of Ferdinand VII, belonged to the Progressive Party, and served as Minister of the Interior in 1840 and 1841. His greatest mark is in the legal world. He led the Madrid Bar Association as dean from 1847 until his death in 1879, re-elected thirty-one times, and ran one of the most respected law firms of the century. The street is a modern opening in the Madrid that was growing northward. It runs from Manuel Silvela to Santa Engracia, where it links up with Caracas, and crosses Covarrubias.
