Calle de Malcampo
Recalls José Malcampo y Monge, a naval officer and politician from Cádiz who chaired the Council of Ministers in 1871 and served as captain general of the Philippines.
The street opened in 1887 as de los Olivares, a name that lasted barely two months: that same year it came to honour José Rudesindo Malcampo y Monge, a naval officer and politician from Cádiz, born in San Fernando in 1828.
His career advanced quickly. During the 1868 revolution that dethroned Isabella II he commanded a frigate, and for his part in it he rose to rear admiral. In October 1871, under the reign of Amadeo of Savoy, he came to chair the Council of Ministers, a government that fell apart barely eleven weeks later. His deepest mark was left in the Philippines: as captain general of the archipelago he led the 1876 Jolo campaign, which earned him the titles of Count of Jolo and Viscount of Mindanao.
The street runs between Vinaroz and Marcenado, in the heart of Ciudad Jardín.
