Calle de Luis Cabrera
Honours Luis Cabrera de Córdoba (1559-1623), a Madrid-born historian and author of the History of Philip II.
Luis Cabrera de Córdoba was born in Madrid in 1559, into a family tied to the royal administration. He received his first crown post at sixteen and rose to become chief upholsterer to Queen Margaret of Austria, an office that placed him within the court circle.
Out of that world came his major work, a chronicle of Philip II still counted among the most valuable written by someone who knew the monarch at close range. The first part appeared in 1619; the second was given up for lost for decades and was not printed until the complete edition of 1876. He asked in writing for the post of royal chronicler and never obtained it in his lifetime.
The street is a modern layout, traced during the expansion of the old Prosperidad suburb. Before it bore the historian’s name it was called calle de Mayorga, and it runs between calle de Francisco Giralte and calle de Santa Hortensia.
