Calle de la Granja

Vallehermoso

Bears the common word granja, a farmhouse with land, though no record survives of the exact reason for its naming in this corner of Vallehermoso.

A granja is, in its oldest sense, the farmhouse with its estate of land, livestock and tools, the homestead that organizes the crops around it. The word comes from the late Latin granica, from granum, the grain stored inside it. From that rural meaning this short street in Vallehermoso takes its name. The name fits the memory of the place. This whole northern flank of Chamberí was open country for centuries, dotted with orchards, brickworks and farmhouses that supplied the town before the city reached them in the late 19th century. The Calle de Vallehermoso itself grew from a popular name before becoming official. Even so, no record survives of the precise reason for this Calle de la Granja. It should not be confused with the Calle de la Granja de San Ildefonso, dedicated to the royal estate in Segovia and located elsewhere in Madrid.
