Calle de José Gutiérrez Abascal

El Viso

Honours José Gutiérrez Abascal (1852-1907), a Madrid journalist who signed as Kasabal and edited El Heraldo de Madrid.

The name recalls José Gutiérrez Abascal (1852-1907), a Madrid man who signed his columns as Kasabal and was one of the names of end-of-century journalism. A chronicler of the capital’s social life, he wrote in mastheads such as El Imparcial and El Liberal, and edited El Heraldo de Madrid from its founding in 1890 until 1902. He combined the pen with politics and served as a deputy for several constituencies in the province of Málaga. The street runs through the residential heart of El Viso. At number 2 stands the National Museum of Natural Sciences, with its Mediterranean woodland garden, sharing a building with the Higher Technical School of Industrial Engineers, housed there since 1907. The name Gutiérrez Abascal is thus tied in the neighbourhood to two scientific institutions more than to the columnist who gave the street its name.
