Calle de Jerónima Llorente

Bellas Vistas

Honors Jerónima Llorente (1793-1848), an actress born in Añover de Tajo who excelled in character roles on Madrid’s stages in the first half of the nineteenth century.

Jerónima Llorente came to Madrid from Añover de Tajo and made her debut at fifteen at the Teatro del Príncipe. The first attempt went badly: when she was sent onstage as a young leading lady, the audience jeered her. She was advised to try character roles, and three days later she played one in Amantes celosos. The same house that had rejected her rose to applaud. That turn shaped her career. Between 1835 and 1848 she was the character actress in the companies of Matilde Díez and Julián Romea, giving life to roles by Moratín and Bretón de los Herreros. For years she was held to be the best in her line on the Spanish stage. She died in Madrid in 1848, and the city dedicated this street in Bellas Vistas to her in 1887.
