Calle de Isidoro Álvarez Álvarez

Delicias

Honors Isidoro Álvarez Álvarez, chairman of El Corte Inglés for a quarter century, in the neighborhood where the company set up its first offices.

The name recalls Isidoro Álvarez Álvarez (Grado, Asturias, 1935 – Madrid, 2014), chairman of El Corte Inglés for a quarter of a century. Nephew of Ramón Areces, he joined the company and in 1989, on his uncle’s death, took the reins of the group, which under him grew into one of Europe’s largest retailers. The street runs through Arganzuela, where the company set up its first offices; the mayor who inaugurated it spoke of El Corte Inglés’s “kilometer zero.” The tribute came slowly: the council approved the dedication in September 2014, days after his death, but the plaque was not unveiled until 2021. The stretch had previously borne the name calle del Plomo.
