Calle de Huesca

Castillejos

It bears the name of Huesca, a city and province of Aragón, within a Castillejos area named after Spanish provinces.

The name travels from Aragón. Huesca, the ancient Roman Osca and the Andalusi Wasqa, gives its name to this road in the Castillejos neighborhood, in the Tetuán district. It commemorates no one and recalls no event: it carries a provincial capital onto Madrid’s map, just as its neighbors do. Huesca does not stand alone. Around it, the street register of this part of Tetuán repeats the same criterion and gathers the names of Spanish provinces: Lérida and Teruel lie a few steps away. It is a frequent habit in Madrid’s expansion, which named whole sets of new streets with series of the country’s place names. Castillejos grew late and at two speeds. Infanta Mercedes splits the neighborhood into one half of straight, orderly layout and another of narrower, winding streets.
