Calle de García Luna

Ciudad Jardín

Honours José García Luna, a Madrid-born actor of the Romantic era who made his name playing Segismundo in La vida es sueño.

Before this name, the street was the calle de la Victoria. In March 1887 Madrid renamed it in memory of José García Luna, one of the most applauded actors of Romantic theatre. He was born in the city in 1798, a nephew of the famous Rita Luna, from whom he learned the trade. He shone in the Romantic repertoire and won fame playing Segismundo, the chained prince who wakes unsure whether he is alive or dreaming. From 1834 he taught elocution at the Conservatory. The street belongs to the earliest layout around Prosperidad and today links, in the heart of the Ciudad Jardín district, the calle de Suero de Quiñones with the calle de Martín Martínez.
