Calle de Fernán Núñez
Recalls the ducal house of Fernán Núñez, whose most famous member was Carlos José Gutiérrez de los Ríos, an enlightened 18th-century diplomat.
The name comes from the noble house of Fernán Núñez, an Andalusian line that rose during the 18th century. Its best-remembered member was Carlos José Gutiérrez de los Ríos, sixth count, ambassador in Lisbon and then in Paris, where he witnessed the outbreak of the French Revolution at close range. A man of the Enlightenment, bibliophile and traveler, he left behind a Life of Charles III, the monarch he served.
The surname appears elsewhere in Madrid, at the Palace of Fernán Núñez on calle de Santa Isabel, now home to a railway foundation. The calle de Fernán Núñez in the Hispanoamérica district honors the same lineage, with no direct link to that building.
